The one-line version

The Sahel — Egypt's Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria — is not one destination. It is a 300-kilometre string of private bays, each with its own crowd, price point and pace. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your week commuting to the summer you actually wanted.

Marassi is the scene

If you want restaurants, beach clubs, a marina and people-watching, Marassi on Sidi Abdel Rahman bay is the centre of gravity. It is the closest thing Egypt has to a Mediterranean resort town in full swing — which also means July and August book out early and quiet is not the point. Base yourself at the marina and walk to everything.

Hacienda Bay and Ras El Hekma are the quieter money

One bay over, Hacienda Bay does the same summer at half the volume — established villas, golf, a boutique hotel scene. Further west, Ras El Hekma is the headland mid-transformation: kite lagoons, blinding white sand, and a coastline that will look completely different in five years. Go now if you want to say you saw it before.

Almaza Bay is the beach

For pure water quality, nothing on this coast touches Almaza: a private, protected bay with powder sand and a gradient of blues that gets mistaken for the Maldives weekly. Three Jaz resorts share it — Elite Crystal for adults, Almaza Beach for families, Oriental for atmosphere — and because the bay is self-contained, you never need to leave.

Marsa Matruh and El Alamein are the outliers

Matruh, the town at the end of the road, offers something the gated bays can't: a real harbour, public cliff coves like Agiba, and a local Mediterranean feel — best enjoyed from a boutique base in town. El Alamein flips the formula the other way: WWII history on one side, the brand-new towers and 14-km promenade of New Alamein City on the other.

When to go

The season runs late May to late September; July–August is peak everything. June and September give you the same sea with half the crowd — and hotel rates that finally make sense.

Why the confusion

All three sit just south of Hurghada airport, all three are gated and master-planned, and all three market themselves with the same turquoise water. The difference is what happens after you drop your bags.

Sahl Hasheesh — the polished bay

A pedestrian promenade, calm reef-protected water and low-rise resorts make Sahl Hasheesh the couples-and-families pick for people who want polish without leaving the property. The Oberoi's all-suite courtyards are the standard-setter here — famously quiet, famously private.

Soma Bay — the sporting peninsula

Soma is its own peninsula with no town at all: a championship golf course, serious wind for kiters on one side, a thalasso spa and a house reef on the other. You come here to do things in the morning and do nothing in the afternoon.

Madinat Makadi — the family engine

Makadi is the value-and-families bay, anchored by Makadi Water World — Egypt's largest aqua park — plus its own golf course and a sheltered swimming bay. If the trip's success is measured by the children, this is the one.

The honest matrix

Honeymoon or anniversary: Sahl Hasheesh. Golf, kite or dive mornings: Soma Bay. Kids under twelve: Makadi. Direct flights land at Hurghada for all three; transfers run 20–40 minutes.

The route

The classic itinerary sails between Luxor and Aswan over three to four nights, stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo. Downstream or upstream matters less than people think; what matters is that Luxor deserves two extra nights on land before or after — Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and a dawn balloon don't fit into a cruise stop.

The boat is the holiday

There are hundreds of vessels on this stretch and the spread in quality is enormous. The short version: small and premium beats big and cheap, every time. A 20–30 cabin boat like the Oberoi Zahra turns the river into a private balcony experience; a 150-cabin boat turns it into a floating buffet queue. This is the one part of an Egypt trip where the top of the market is worth every pound.

Bookending the cruise

Start with Luxor on land — the Achti resort's West Bank views make an easy base — and end with two nights in Aswan at the Old Cataract, where the sunset terrace above the First Cataract is reason enough for the whole trip. Cairo bolts on at either end with a one-hour flight.

When to sail

October to April is the season; December–February is peak (book months ahead). Summer sailings run at deep discounts but afternoons on deck reach 42°C — doable, honestly, only for heat-lovers.
